  • Software Evaluation
  • I looked at a particular piece of software and decided whether it would be beneficial for a student with whom I was working.  We looked at a piece of storytelling software and then created he created his own story component based on the software.  The student used technology to reinforce his reading and writing skills (11.1).  In planning this computer lesson, I was able to correlate computer skills with his other curricular objectives (10.1).  The goal met was competency goal 2.8 (Participate in the planning and creation of a class multimedia story which includes student narration) for the second grade (10.4). This particular software fit very well into the content that his classroom teacher was covering (11.3).  The student is a very visual learner and does better with a visual to go with the lesson.  I took his learning style into account when I was choosing the software to use with him (13.1).  A nice feature of this particular software is that it is bilingual.  At the very beginning of the program, the user can choose English or Spanish.    Students, whether they speak English or Spanish, can see the same story and compare the two languages (13.3).  As an assessment for this activity, I could bring in questions such as "What small, hand-held device is used to move the cursor to a specific location on the screen?"  This question is a sample question found on the North Carolina Department of Education testing page (10.5).
