Article #4 Culture Kit

Rationale: Culture Kit

Context:

While in Block 436, during the Spring Semester of 2002,  my Social Studies in the Elementary School class engaged in an activity called Culture Kits. These Culture Kits included at least 8 various items that represented a culture within
a country. The country that I researched was Ireland, since I hope to travel there some day. These Culture Kits could make my teacher and peers aware of the customs, traditions, history, and events that take place in the country that I chose.
Impact:
While teaching I will stress the importance of learning new cultures and customs from different lands.I am sure there will be times where my students will come in contact with a person of another background, therefore, understanding other cultures will prepare them for the future. In addition, it is a fascinating activity that will engage students in learning more about another country.
Alignment:
While working on the Culture Kit I found my information on the internet, books from the library, questioned people I knew, and also from movies that I had seen. These ways of retrieving information would cater to the most diverse learners. Developmentally appropriate opportunities arise with creating a Culture Kit, the level that you have to be on when doing this activity is just the desire to learn about another culture/country. I used the Internet (computer technology) as a resource to find the majority of my artifacts. (Tech Standard IIA.)   While constructing the Culture Kit, the technology practiced concentrates on the curriculum in order to correctly implement skills that are to be learned in a productive and worthy way. The student should feel that this activity will be worth the trouble of researching a different culture. (Tech Standard III B.) By engaging in this Culture Kit activity students will realize that diverse backgrounds are positive. Culture Kits support the exploration of other cultures and reveal that there are great benefits with the investigation of another realm, not just for one person, but for all. The resources that affirm Culture Kits are splendid and the information could be found in books, internet web sites, passersby, films, and much more. The students will have a pleasant time doing this activity. (Tech Standard VI.C.)
