To begin this literature unit, read Polacco's Mr. Lincoln's Way. Before reading, break the class into groups and assign the five elements of a story, one element to each group. Tell each group to listen for their element while the story is being read aloud. After the story has been read, tell the students they will be creating an atrium by making individual trees incorporating their element of the story. Give each group a large, white piece of paper and markers/crayons. Allow for as much creativity as possible. Each group's element should be displayed somewhere on their tree. When their projects are complete, display on the wall as to portray a colorful atrium. |
