Before you introduce the novels to be used in this unit, take the time to introduce the different time periods in which the novels take place.  As the teacher you should gather different artifacts and pictures from the different time periods.  Have the students split into groups and work with one specific time period.  Have them explore the items and pictures and discuss their different uses.  Once the students have a understanding of the items and pictures, they are to create a short story using the information they learned about the time period from  these different items.
