Artifact Two:  National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: This artifact is Entry One: Examining Children's Literacy Development, used in my Early Childhood/Generalist Portfolio when I became a National Board Certified Teacher.

Context: This artifact is a case study of two students' progress in my first grade classroom and my analysis of their learning and my teaching.  Some of the assessments I used in this study were from ASU and required by my school system.

Impact: This was my first experience analyzing my students' weakness and my teaching of reading.  It made me look closely at my teaching.  I began to look at individuals and how I could meet their needs.

Alignment: These reading assessments are aligned with the following NBPTS standards.

Standard 1  Teachers are committed to students and their learning.  This artifact shows how I recognized the individual differences in these students and how I take this into account in my teaching.

Standard 2  Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.  This artifact shows how I can create 2 different paths for these two students learning to read.

Standard 3  Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.  This artifact shows how I motivate students to learn by enriching and altering instruction for them.

Standard 4  Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.  I had to draw on my knowledge of child development, reading development, and  my understanding of my students to make good judgments about my teaching practice.

Standard 5  Teachers are members of learning communities.   In these studies, I realized how important parent communication can be.  I tried to involve the parents as teachers at home for my students.
