Artifact
One: Reading Clinic - This artifact is taken from the summer
tutoring program at ASU with Dr. Morris.
Context: In this 5 week summer course, Dr.
Morris provided us with assessment and tutoring materials and
techniques. I tutored 2 students for an hour, four days a week for 4
weeks. My first students was a second grade girl who was weak on fluency
and didn't enjoy reading. My second student was a 7th grade boy for
did not pass the EOG test. He loved to read, but could not comprehend
material that did not interest him. These samples are from my second
grade student.
Impact: The reading Clinic has had a great
impact on me as a teacher. I have continued to use many of the
methods I learned in this program, especially the word sorting and
rereading techniques. Tutoring the 7th grade boy was a wonderful
experience for me. This was my first experience working with older
children.
Alignment:
These reading
assessments are aligned with the following NBPTS
standards.
Standard 2 Teachers know
the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
The reading clinic was a wonderful experience for me to actually use the
information I have learned in my master's program by teaching
students.
Standard 3 Teachers are
responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. This
experience taught us how to monitor a student's progress and how to manage
our teaching time to cover as much as we could in the time allowed.
Standard 4 Teachers
think systematically about their practice and learn from
experience. The Reading Clinic was a great learning
experience. We were able to learn from advisors and our
students.
