Artifact Ten:  Case Studies

These case studies were conducted during the Reading Assessment and Correction course.  They were completed at the children's home (subjects were brothers) during Spring 2005.

Context:  Since I do not normally work with younger students, I chose two elementary school students in order to personally learn more about this age group's learning abilities.  The most surprising finding was how similar both subjects' abilities were despite the fact that they were two grade levels apart.  Through this project, I learned how to effectively perform reading assessments and then make appropriate decisions about each student's learning based upon these findings.

Alignment:  In completing this activity, the following Standards for the Master's Degree were met:

A.   Instructional Expertise

The candidate demonstrates instructional expertise by applying the theoretical, philosophical, and research bases for educational practice in P-12 settings to improve student learning.

The case studies provided the opportunity for me to analyze the assessment findings and then plan appropriate instructional methods so that the students will experience learning successes.

B.  Knowledge of Learners

The candidate incorporates knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for evaluating learning into the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction.

The recommendations for instruction demonstrates my ability to adjust learning so that students can be successful.  Since students gain confidence through success, they will begin to enjoy coming to school.

E.  Professional Development and Leadership

The candidate engages in continued professional development and provides leadership at the classroom, school, and community levels, and within the profession.

This report can be slightly adjusted so that it can be shared with other professionals and parents so that they can understand this child's reading abilities and acquisition needs.
