What Are the Best Methods for Teaching English Language Learners?
This research study, created during my Seminar course, focused on the best methods to instruct English Language Learners (ELLs) in Language Arts classes. By looking at a variety of previous research studies and effective classroom practices for ELLs, I was able to conclude which methods would be the most effective when teaching this special group of learners.
Context: For several years, I have taught English Language Learners in an inclusion class. I have always known that these students learn differently but it never created difficulties since my students are in middle school and have mastered many of the English language's intricacies. This year however a Hmong student was promoted to the seventh grade who has only been in this country since 2004. I had no idea how to help him learn to read and write. As a result of this extensive research, I have now learned the steps that ELLs progress through when learning how to read as well as methods to implement in order to help them navigate this process.

B. Knowledge of Learners
The candidate incorporates knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for evaluating learning into the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction.
This research has helped me to understand the differences and similarities between how native speakers learn the English language versus students from various linguistic cultures. With this knowledge I can modify instruction so that each student achieves success in their learning experiences.
C. Research
The candidate uses research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.
By conducting this research, I was able to review research articles conducted by colleges and professionals coupled with articles which detail effective instructional practices in order to improve teaching methods.
D. Content Knowledge
The candidate demonstrates advanced depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the academic discipline and in education.
Throughout this research study, I had to constantly draw connections and relationships among the many studies and theoretical practices I discovered in order to create a method of instruction which would best assist my ELL students.
