Artifact Six:  Nouns PowerPoint

This PowerPoint presentation was created during my Instructional Technology course.  Even middle school students need a "refresher" lesson on basic parts of speech and this is a unique way to present it.

Context: The Nouns PowerPoint presentation is geared towards visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.  Not only can the students see the pictures of the types of nouns and hear the pictures being identified, but they can also see the words written on the Word document as well as copy them down on paper.  Additionally, tactile learners would benefit from writing the nouns on small pieces of paper and sorting them into columns representing the types of nouns.  In essence, this is a fun and interesting way to review what is normally a boring worksheet based lesson.

Alignment:  In completing this activity, the following Standards for the Master's Degree program were met:

A.   Instructional Expertise

The candidate demonstrates instructional expertise by applying the theoretical, philosophical, and research bases for educational practice in P-12 settings to improve student learning.

Current students do not have the attention span in order to complete never-ending grammar worksheets.  Additionally, the successful completion of these worksheets does not translate into proper usage when asked to write a paper.  By using a media friendly method of instruction, students are more apt to pay attention and then use this information into their own writing.

B.  Knowledge of Learners

The candidate incorporates knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for evaluating learning into the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction.

This artifact is designed for a variety of learning styles so that all students can experience success.  It is also a fast-paced and visually stimulating review lesson so that students will focus on the lesson.

D.  Content Knowledge

The candidate demonstrates advanced depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the academic discipline and in education.

Studies have shown the current use of grammar worksheets are not the best method to teach this subject; therefore, it is necessary for educators to change their teaching methods in order to spark interest in the given subject.
