Artifact FourWord Study

Word Study was introduced in my classroom after I had RE 5540-with Dr. Bloodgood.  The instruction in word study made it clear that children need to be learning at their level, not only in reading but also in spelling.

Context:

By slowing trying what I was being taught, I was able to set up my room to be conducive to proper word study learning.  In the class, my group and I successfully prepared and planned a tongue twister lesson and cards to be utilized in our classrooms.  It was a bit overwhelming at first, but with continued effort and studying on my part, it has proven to be a successful addition for my student's learning.

Standards:

      Standard A:  Instructional Expertise

I used the instructional information that I was taught and the text, Words Their Way, as my primary source of information to set up word sorts and games to use in literacy stations.  Based on the initial assessment that I gave the students, I was able to place them in the appropriate group for optimum learning.  As we met throughout the week, I was able to modify the instruction for individuals or make it more challenging based on their learning.

     ● Standard B:  Knowledge of the Learners

By working with the students daily, I was able to understand which part of the word study that they were successful with and which area(s) were causing them difficulty.  Each student took on the objective and made changes in their thinking to grasp the concepts that were being presented in our word groups.  Being able to work with partners at the same learning level gave many of the students the confidence that they needed to proceed with challenging curriculum.

      ● Standard C:  Research

As we progressed through the class, we read articles that dealt with children's learning in a word study classroom.  I saw myself and my children in many of the articles and believed that I was on the correct path in directing their learning.

      ● Standard D:  Content Knowledge

By learning about the word study during this class, I began to understand why so many teachers are using word study in their classrooms.  Word study identifies the areas of study that the students need and also which areas are already mastered.  Word study was such a great catalyst that I was able to implement the learning in other areas of the curriculum to enhance the students' learning.

      ● Standard E:  Professional Development and Leadership

As a result of my learning, I have shared that word study concept with several of my colleagues.  We meet each month to discuss concerns and clarify misunderstandings that go along with setting up your classroom for this type of learning.  As a result, many of the students are finding success in spelling, reading and writing.
