Artifact #5:  Reader Response Project   This artifact contains a Reader Response Project that was completed to discover what type of literature my students most enjoyed.  By being aware of their interests, I can better choose materials to meet their academic needs, as well as appeal to their personal interests.

Context:  This artifact, which was a product of Advanced Children’s Literature, is a Reader Response Study that involved sharing five books with my students.  Because the class focused on literature, one of the goals was to educate teachers of the different types of print and formats currently available to children.  The books included an online book, a tall tale, a fictional narrative, a biography, and an electronic book.  Students read in partners or listened to the story as a read aloud.  After each reading students completed a Reader Response Survey, followed by an informal book talk.  The various components of this artifact include a bibliography of books shared with students, a student response survey, and graphs of student ratings.

Alignment:

Standard BKnowledge of Learners

The candidate incorporates knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for evaluating learning into the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction.

Through this Reader Response Study, I attempt to develop a deeper understanding of my students.  The group of students chosen for this project is comprised of struggling readers.  In order to increase their motivation to read, I learn which genres, topics, literary elements, etc appeal to them.  Once this information is obtained, I am able to create a classroom environment in which my students feel welcome and can experience success.
