Artifact #6:  Professional Growth   This artifact contains an outline and program summary of a presentation given at the North Carolina Reading Association conference on March 10, 2005.

Context:  This artifact proves my willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues to improve the quality of education for the students at my school.  As the teachers at our school learn of effective strategies, we seek opportunities to share that information.

Standard C:  Research

The candidate uses research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.

Many of the ideas we try at my school come from books such as Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook and Richard Allington’s What Really Matters for Struggling Readers.  These are books we have read and discussed as a faculty.  As a result, many of the ideas from these books have been incorporated in my classroom, such as displaying books with the cover facing out, conducting reading conferences daily, and reading aloud to my students. 

Standard D:  Content Knowledge

The candidate demonstrates advanced depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the academic discipline and in education.

This artifact shows my awareness of current theory and research findings as they relate to current practice.   

Standard E:  Professional Development and Leadership

The candidate engages in continues professional development and provides leadership at the classroom, school, and community levels, and within the profession.

 This artifact illustrates my willingness to participate in professional development programs.
