Artifact #8:  Action Research   This artifact contains an action research project focusing on using word mapping as a tool for increasing comprehension of non-fiction text.

Context:  This action research project was completed as part of Teacher as Researcher.  Throughout the course, I read research on current educational topics pertaining to the field of reading.  Additionally, I became familiar with the benefits of conducting research studies in the classroom and within the school.  Each school, as well as each individual teacher, deals with a specific group of students and faculty, and the issues that come with each specific situation.  As an educator, it is important to identify problems and work closely with fellow teachers and administrators to develop possible solutions.  This particular action research project examined using a vocabulary strategy to help students develop a better understanding of non-fiction text.

Alignment:

Standard C:  Research

The candidate uses research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.

As part of this project, I referred to current vocabulary research conducted by leading researchers, such as Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown.  While applying the findings of their research, my goal was to investigate an educational concern I had within my classroom.  Because more of my students struggled to comprehend non-fiction text, I used action research as a means to explore instructional alternatives to help my students better understand content area subject matter.

         Standard D:  Content Knowledge

The candidate demonstrates advanced depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the academic discipline and in education.

This artifact shows my ability to find current research that relates to educational problems or issues.  Based on findings from research journals and from research that I have conducted, I can improve my current practice.

Standard E:  Professional Development and Leadership

The candidate engages in continued professional development and provides leadership at the classroom, school, and community levels, and within the profession.

This action research project shows my ability to initiate inquiry through reading journals, as well as action research.  Seeking input from colleagues is also a valuable resource as I continue to improve my instruction.  As conclusions are reached through professional inquiry and in collaboration with educators, parents, and students, they can be shared formally and informally.
