Appalachian State University Children's Literature Database

This is an online database that contains various types of children's literature. The database includes information about the publisher, author, brief summary, and instructional ideas for each book.

Context

My contribution to this database was made during my senior block in the fall of 2002 at Appalachian State University. The database entries were completed for the class, Language and Literacy in the Elementary School, under the direction of Mrs. Beth Frye.

Impact

This database will be an invaluable tool to me as a teacher. This database will make it much easier for me to find literature that is appropriate to the instructional levels of my students. The database can be easily accessed and searched. I will be able to access reviews of literature along with instructional ideas for books on many different reading levels and genres. The database is a very productive way for my colleagues and I to communicate our findings about children's literature. By contributing to the database, I also learned how to evaluate the literature that my students will read before they are exposed to the books.

Alignment

This web based literature database will be an efficient way for me as a teacher to increase productivity in my classroom and in planning through the use of technology resources. With the help of my colleagues, I can save time by looking for the reviews of the books I want my students to read. The database entries also give me ideas on lessons that follow the reading of these books. I will be able to spend my time more productively by inventing new and exciting ways to introduce these great books in my classroom and get my students excited about reading (Technology Competency V C).
