  Modern Fashion and Invention

Context

The Modern Fashion and Invention project was created in a media and technology course at Appalachian State University.  Under the instruction of Jeff Goodman, we learned how to integrate technology into the project by creating a web page after we came up with an invention, wrote a newspaper article on the invention, and took pictures of the invention using a digital camera.

Impact
I plan to use this in my classroom to get children to use technology by learning how to create a web page and use a digital camera to take pictures.  By completing this project the students will become familiar with the different programs used to create the web page.  The students will also use their language arts skills by writing a newspaper article about the item they invented.  This project will be fun for the students, in that they will create an invention of an ordinary object and then work with the computer to create a web page.

Alignment

The Modern Fashion and Invention project helps manage student learning by allowing the students to put their newsletter, about the invention that they created, on a web page.  Not only do they work on their writing skills, but they also work with technology by working with a digital camera in taking pictures of their invention to putting their final product on the web (Tech II E).  This activity also addresses many parts of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study Curriculum (Tech III A).  Objectives that are met through this lesson for a fifth grade class include:
Language Arts Curriculum  -  1.01, 1.04, 4.08, 4.09, 4.10, 5.01, 5.07, and 5.08
Information Skills Curriculum  -  4.09, 4.10, 5.02, 5.04, and 5.05
Computer Skills Curriculum  -  2.4 and 3.7
This artifact uses technology to help students do creative work and think creatively.  The newsletter they create will incorporate technology because of the pictures the students will take of the product that they invented.  When the students create their web page they will get a good feel for the programs as they work through the project to make their web page look exciting (Tech III D).  This project helps to see the students' use of technology by evaluating the final results of their web page (Tech IV C).  Since the students are working in groups, it is vital that the teacher remember to have all students participate in the project.  Teachers are reminded to do this on the Teacher Page of this lesson so that the student pairs will switch off in order for all students to have an opportunity to steer.  Each group will sign up for a specific time set by the teacher, so they will get an equal amount of time to work on the project (Tech VI E).  The teacher can assess the students formally and informally by assessing how they work together as a group and by assessing the final results of their project.  When they present their projects, the teacher will be able to assess the social and physical development of the learner (INTASC 8).
