Artifact One
Picture
Story Activity linked to Third Grade Computer Skills Curriculum.
This is a web page set up for students that gives them instructions on
how to complete an activity entitled “Story Pictures”. This activity allows
students to utilize computer skills, listed in the Third Grade Computer
Skills Curriculum.
Context
This web page was created using Netscape Composer. I created
this artifact as a part of my Media Class, during my Elementary Education
Block at ASU. This web page provides students with instructions for
the completion of a sequencing activity using pictures on the web page.
Students, in third grade, are to create a sequence for the pictures and
then create a word processed document explaining the story they have created
for the pictures. This allows students to both attain task directions
from a computer source and create a product with a word processing program.
Impact
This activity can be used by teachers to involve students in an activity,
that targets both language arts and computer skills and competencies. This
presentation of a lesson to students with a media source is an effective
way for teachers to communicate with students, using technology. This Web
page allows teachers to target various learning styles and further students’
development of computer skills with a fun and educationally worthwhile
activity. This Web site will be useful for teachers of various grade
levels because the activity can be adapted to various levels of student
development.
Alignment
This Web page includes activity guidelines for students to create a
word processed document, creatively explaining the sequence of a set of
random pictures. Students are required to use the Language Arts skills
of creative writing and drawing conclusions, as stated in the Third Grade
Standard Course of Study. This activity also requires students to
implement the computer skills of gaining information from a web page and
using a word processing document to record their ideas. The Computer
Skills portion of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Third
Grade is linked to this Web Page (Tech.
Competency 10.1). This Web Page allows teachers to introduce
an activity to students via the World Wide Web (INTASC
#4). This alternative instructional strategy encourages students
to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to complete this activity.
Students who do better with visual, activity instructions would benefit
greatly from this website. The site helps meet the learning needs of a
variety of learning styles by presenting activity instructions in a visually
stimulating way. This method of presenting information to students differs
from the traditional approach of lecture or worksheet instructions.
By utilizing this website, a teacher is considering the learning needs
of students who learn better with non-traditional instruction (INTASC
#3). Students can “hear” their teacher’s directions for the task
by utilizing the computer in their classroom (Tech.
Competency 11.1).
