Media Influence Video- a
video taped documentary developed to find data about how children in grades
4-5 have been influenced by the mass media. Interviews were conducted
at our partnerships schools through Appalachian State University.
Context
This Media Influence Video documentary was developed during my pre-service
training at Appalachian State University during the Fall 2000.
Impact
The Media Influence video was created by using a Camcorder on a tripod.
Students were interviewed by another intern and myself. We had some basic
questions that we asked each student, and while the interview was being
conducted some responses lead to new questions. Upon completion of
the project students and teachers can view the documentary and give opinions
about it. The discussion that would follow would allow for the students
and teachers to talk about how they feel media has influenced their lives.
Students could then create their own video to show how media is involved
in their lives. The students would be able to use the previous mentioned
video as a model.
Alignment
The Media Influence Video permits teachers to use other technologies
effectively and appropriately to collect information on student learning
using a variety of methods such as recording student responses for a documentary
(Tech.
Comp. 12.2). The teacher uses a video to present this subject
so that it is more understood and meaningful to others (Tech.
Comp. 11.2). It does this by focusing attention to the students in
the video and presenting their thoughts about media. It would be
shown with only the minimum amount of editing. This video allows
teachers to meet significant goals in the Information Skills Curriculum
about Media Awareness and lets students express themselves in a media form
(Tech. Comp. 12.7). Students would
learn how to use the media equipment and practice interviewing skills by
creating this video.
