Name

Altavista is a resource that can be accessed on the Internet that allows users to type in text and have it translated.

Context

During my Fall semester of my senior year at Appalachian State University, I was introduced to the translator Altavista, by some fellow classmates.  I was able to experiment with using this translator site so that I could use it in the future if needed.

Impact

Altavista is easily accessed on the Internet and is available for anyone to use.  Teachers and students can use this site to communicate with others who speak a different language or even to read text of a different language.

Alignment

Altavista helps level the possibilities for all students regardless of their background.  If a student does not speak English teachers or students can type in what they want to say and Altavista quickly translates it.  The whole class has a way of communicating with one another.  Altavista helps erradicate language obstacles in the classroom. (Technology Standard VI. B).  Teachers can make Altavista a part of their classroom so that it is viewed as a positive tool for communication.  Diversity will be easier for students to deal with because they will feel empowered in situations where they are different, rather than fearful of what they don't understand.  Technology helps forge a connection between people so that diversity can be recognized and accepted by everyone. (Technology Standard VI.  C).
