Name

Modern Fashion and Design is a web page that addresses both teachers and children and provides a creative-centered activity along with the instructions and an example.

Context

This web page was completed during my Block experience in the Fall of 2001.The project idea and layout was established with a partner, but was produced and completed as an individual artifact.

Impact

Modern Fashion and Design was created to easily meet the needs of students and teachers. Both can access the lesson instructions online and implement for personal use. This lesson web page meets several of the NC Computer Competencies and Language Arts Competencies, which are included on the web pages of the product.

Alignment

Modern Fashion and Design is produced to provide an activity or lesson that encourages student creativity and at the same time involves them in meeting educational standards. First of all, students are asked to pick a random object and come up with a new invention for that object. Students must think critically about what they're going to invent with the object they are given.  This part of the lesson is left totally for the students to create. (INTASC Principle 4)  Once students have established what their new invention is, they take a picture of it and write about their invention in the form of a news article. Students then have the possibilities of word processing their articles or even designing a web page for their work. By fulfilling these lesson objectives students, definitely meet Language Arts Competencies by writing their articles as well as Computer Competencies by word processing their articles or creating web pages. (Technology Standard III. A)  Meeting students’ needs and making sure that they are using technology as a productive learning activity, Modern Fashion and Design includes a link to specifically providing student instructions. Using a web page in this form allows myself as a teacher, as well as other teachers, to provide a concrete method of ensuring how students become involved with technology. The student instruction page manages student learning through technology because it gives specific details regarding how students should complete the project. (Technology Standard III. D)  Furthermore, Modern Fashion and Design uses technology as a method of attracting student interest in learning. The usual approach of lecture and textbooks is set aside temporarily to allow students to engage in various means of communication: verbal, nonverbal and media.Students also work collaboratively and individually to complete this project and interact in class. ( INTASC Principle 6)  Being a web page, parents, peers and others can share ideas, ask questions about the lesson and implement the lesson for their own purpose. My E-mail connection provides an easy method of communication. The teacher’s page that is part of Modern Fashion and Design is available for teacher collaboration and assistance intended to foster student learning. (Technology Standard V. D)  Overall, this lesson stimulates and encourages students’ higher order thinking skills and creativity with the use of technology. When the students are given a random item they are put in charge of designing a completely new invention! They must think of what it can be and how it can be used. The possibilities for a product are endless and are left up to the students to invent and support. The guidelines are provided, but after that the lesson is left up to the discretion of the students.
