Software
Evaluation
CONTEXT: I completed a software review of Disney’s Math Quest with Aladdin during a Curriculum and Instruction course at Appalachian State University under the supervision of Pam Schram. IMPACT: After reviewing the Math Quest software, I was better able to understand ways in which technology software, a game that gives practice on a variety of math skills, can further enhance a student’s learning. Being knowledgeable about the benefits of this type of interactive software will allow me to incorporate such programs into the learning environment of my classroom. ALIGNMENT: This software review meets
goals IIB and IIC of the National Technology Standards for Teachers, as
well as INTASC standards III and IX. During this review, I used research
skills to further my knowledge of technology and to discover programs that
I could implement into my classroom instruction. Keeping up to date
on various programs will allow me to be prepared for using such in the
learning environment (IIB). When I completed my investigation, I
realized that I had compiled a list of resources that evaluate other computer
software. These evaluations include grade level appropriateness,
skills taught, as well as student/teacher opinions. This will benefit
me as I search for suitable programs to include in the classroom (IIC).
This type of software will be invaluable when I plan for the different
instructional needs and levels in my classroom. Disney’s Math Quest
can be played by learning disabled, as well as, gifted learners because
this interactive program allows the math level to be changed at any time
during its use (INTASC III). Upon completion of this project, I demonstrated
my dedication to investigating resources that will help me develop as a
teacher and as a learner. When experimenting with the Math Quest
software, I showed my interest in seeking out opportunities to grow professionally
(INTASC IX).
