Rationale 7: Web sites for Students who’s Primary Language is not English

Competency 13.3: “ Use media and technology to support learning for children whose primary language is not English.”

Context: 

    I went to www.freetranslation.com and I wrote a letter to a student’s parents. I then used the site’s program to translate the letter from English to Spanish. I then used this site to translate a web page from English to Spanish. I translated www.pbs.org web site to Spanish.
 I then went to the site www.englishlearner.com. I printed off a hangman game. The game hangman and other resources on this web page will help a student learn his or her English.

Impact: 

    In NC, there were over 44,000 students who understood little or no English. Since I will be teaching in NC, it is highly probable that I will have students, or parents of students, who are not fluent in English. I will have to be able to use programs, such as free translation, in order to effectively communicate with these people. 

Alignment:

    This artifact aligns with competency 13.3. I now know how to use the computer to translate notes and web pages into different languages. This will be extremely helpful when I need to communicate with non-English speaking people.
