Textbook Analysis

Artifact 3
Textbook Analysis

Context:

This artifact contains a project that was created in a social studies method course in Block 436 at Appalachian State University, under the instruction of Michael Jacobson.  Along with a partner, we wrote a comparison analysis paper on two student textbooks written by two different companies.  We looked for strengths and weaknesses in both texts in order to decide which we would choose to use with our students.

Impact:

Being able to analyze a textbook is a very useful resource for teachers.  This project made me aware of the different types of textbooks that are available for use by teachers, and has helped me realize how important the textbook evaluations are.  It allowed me to perform an evaluation on my own so that I can make judgments for myself when I am making decisions for my students in my classroom.  By being able to perform a textbook analysis, I am confident that I will be better equipt to make the right choices to benefit my students in the future.

Alignment:
This project aligns with Tech Competency II C, because it allows you to learn how to locate the many different resources that are available, as well as learning to evaluate and look at what is and isn't available in each of the resources.  As a teacher we have to think of the effectiveness of each of  resource and conclude on the style that best fits us individually that will allow us to convey knowledge to our future students.

Alignment with INTASC Standards:

This artifact aligns with INTACS Standard 7 because it is important for the instructor to think about each student in the class and consider the yearly and daily goals to formulate instructional plans that best fits the students and the curriculum.
