Literacy Activity
Each
Block student developed an activity promoting media literacy. This
portion of the block assignments blanketed five Advanced Technology Competencies.
As students, our objective was to address issues of advertising through
media sources and create a learning environment for our students which
would be beneficial. Meanwhile, we were mastering crucial aspects
of technology that will be useful while student teaching and in our future
careers.
Students
had the option of pairing up with one another. As a part of this
project, a web page was created containing a lesson plan which was implemented
during the field internship in the elementary school in which we were assigned.
This
activity met several Advanced Technology Competencies. By doing a
web page which provided resources via reported research and links to corresponding
web sites, my partner and I made our lesson plan available to whomever
was interested (10.3). The Media Literacy
Activity incorporated the use of telecommunications and the use of technology
for word processing (11.1).
Our
lesson plan contained a presentation of short commercial clips which were
shown to learners via a VCR in the technology lab controlled by the in-class
computer (12.6). The use of video clips
was to depict advertising through that particular medium (television) (11.4).
The lesson included grouping the classroom into several areas, each area
covering a separate type of media. The class utilized a variety of
media to report what they learned about advertising (12.1).
In order to ensure equal access to all students, presentations were shared
to the entire class, and afterwards, students encountered a form of media
not presented by his or her group, and wrote about that media (14.2).
