Harry
Potter Video Project- A video news broadcast based on some things that
happened or could have happened in the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone by J.K. Rowling.
Context
This video was taped and edited for my Media
Literacy class at Appalachian State University in February, March, and
April. It was taped using a digital video camera and edited using iMovie.
Impact
In this book, Harry Potter is forced to
live with his aunt and uncle after his parents are killed. They treat him
terribly and prefer to pretend that he really is not there. We took this
part of the book and decided to have the police go question Harry's aunt
and uncle about rumors of child neglect and abuse. This video project can
be used with students in a fifth grade class. It meets curriculum standards
in Language Arts because students would have to read and study the book
in order to use it as a basis of video project.
Alignment
We used digital video to tape our news broadcast
of the police questioning Harry's guardians. We edited the tape on a computer
but used TV to view our final product and share it with others. (Tech
competency 10.2) We utilized TV resources by inserting a clip of a
police car from a cable show into our video. (Tech
Competency 12.6) This project took a lot of collaborative effort. As
always when working in a group compromises have to be made. In most circumstances,
it should be left up to the students to work together and solve problems
that occur. When they do this they are taking an active part in their learning.
By having a class environment that allows for students to take responsibility
for their work and respect their classmates, the teacher allows for the
students to work comfortably and productively in all group projects. (Tech
competency 12.5)
