Artifact Four: Multi-Genre Lesson: Christmas Around the World This lesson was created to allow students to research a topic using various genres of their choice in the presentation of the materials. The students' creativity is evident during the presentation of their project. Context: During my RE 5130 Teaching the Language Arts class I had to complete a multi-genre project on a topic of my choice. I chose to complete my multi-genre project on the fortieth president Ronald Wilson Reagan. I used various genres to represent the life and times of Ronald Reagan. Some of the genres I used included letters, a birth certificate, collages, poems, invitations, posters, postcards, family trees, etc. I learned many strategies and practices by completing the multi-genre project. Dr. Ulmer shared numerous ways to get reluctant writers interested in the research process by using alternative ways for them to express their new knowledge. This multi-genre project can be appealing to even the most struggling learners.
Alignment: Standard A: Instructional Expertise This standard exhibits my ability to integrate literacy into various subject areas. Reading and writing activities are designed in a creative way which aids in student motivation, as well as supports student learning. Standard B: Knowledge of Learners The classroom environment is conducive to learning so that all students feel welcome and can be successful as a learner. The multi-genre project allows the students to read, write, and research about a topic of their choice. The material is presented in a fun, memorable manner that is valued as a life-long activity. Standard C: Research Research is used to explore the various teaching practices that enhance student learning and performance. The teacher uses research findings to analyze their teaching practices to keep abreast with current practices in education. Standard D: Content Knowledge This artifact uses research to address and understand current knowledge and trends in education as it pertains to the various learning styles and needs that exist within a classroom.
Standard E: Professional Development and
Leadership This standard reflects the use of students and
teachers working collaboratively to design alternative methods of
assessments across several content areas. Collaborative effort with
teachers and fellow students provide struggling learners the opportunity
to use multi-media to reflect on their knowledge.
