This artifact consists of
a Textbook Analysis. It compares
two Social Studies textbooks that have been adopted by the state of North
Carolina.
Context
I analyzed these two Social Studies
texts during the Fall of 2001 at Appalachian State University under the
instruction of Mrs. Betty Dishman. I used two Social Studies textbooks
found in Belk Library at Appalachian State University.
Impact
It is necessary for teachers to evaluate
textbooks in order to give their opinions on which books will be best used
in their classrooms. I am not a big advocate of textbooks, however,
there are times when they can be very useful and an effective teaching
tool. Teachers often base their instructional plans on textbooks,
and understanding which textbooks are most appropriate is crucial.
Alignment
Often, the state curriculum is noted
in textbooks, which can aide a teacher in the job of planning and strategizing
integration for success in the classroom. Textbook analysis, for
any subject is fundamental so the planning process, subject matter taught,
and the community and curriculum goals can be met (INTASC
7).
