Artifact 6:  Database of Software Evaluation

Context: With a small group, I reviewed six different pieces of educational software.  They included: Encarta Africana, Explorapedia: The World of Nature, Grammar Rock, Math Munchers, Paintbrush, and Where In The USA Is Carmen Sandiago?.  After exploring each piece of software, I then assessed the software on such criteria as age level, strengths, weaknesses, subjects, and rating (1-5).  After compiling all of the available information, I then entered the data into a database using Microsoft Works.  Using the “sort” and “filter” options, I was able to manipulate the database to custom fit my needs – a copy of each sort and filter page is attached.  These options help me to find the information I’m looking for based on the criteria I have to work with, without having to search through the entire database to find what I need.

Impact: I am now able to efficiently evaluate software, so I am prepared to choose top quality software for my class that I feel would be the most efficient and helpful, and since most of the software that I evaluated can be manipulated to fit different learning capabilities, I am thus able to meet the needs of diverse learners.  I know what to look for in a software program and I have criteria to guide me as I evaluate the software under review.  Also, I understand that children need to know how to use and create a database, and with my knowledge of how to do so, I will be able to help them learn the intricacies of adding and finding information in a database.  Last, I coupled my personal evaluations with backed-up research from internet software reviews, such as  http://www.childrenssoftware.com/ and  http://www.superkids.com/ .

Alignment: This artifact shows that I can locate and evaluate resources (Tech-competency II-C), use technology to reach children at different levels by locating appropriate criteria for software to fit their individual needs (Tech-competency II-A), and it shows that I can effectively locate information and communicate my results.  Also, because I have used research on teaching and learning with technology, this artifact aligns with Tech-competency II-B.  Last, this artifact demonstrates that I am reflecting on the use of technology in school (Tech-competency V-B).
