Artifact 9: Web sites for students whose primary language is not English

Context: This artifact contains a printout from www.englishlearner.com and a printout of Appalachian State University’s home page translated in Italian by using www.altavista.comThis artifact was produced to help students who use English as a second language by using the resources from the sites above.

Impact: Using the “englishlearner” site, I found a page containing activities called “Warmers” that I could use in my classroom that are similar to “icebreaker” activities, except these activities are geared towards students whose primary language is one other than English. One of the warmers is especially helpful for pre teaching the defining of relative clause, which causes many problems (particularly for Hungarian speakers.) Also, I went to the AltaVista home page, which allowed me to look at any internet site in a variety of different languages as well as be able to translate any sentence or phrase into a variety of languages. This will be immensely helpful because it will shorten the communication gap that will be so prevalent in the classroom, by helping me to locate any web site in a different language and also by helping me to quickly find what I need to say to a student in his or her language.

Alignment: This artifact aligns with Tech-competency VI-C because it shows that I can find and use technology to communicate with students cross culturally, thus supporting diversity.  This artifact also demonstrates that I can provide learning opportunities that support a child's intellectual, social, and personal development (INTASC Principle 2).
