Media Literacy Ethnography

Content:   The Media Literacy Ethnography artifact was done in my technology course during my senior year in college.  A couple of group members and I collected data from kindergarten and first grade students about body image.  We asked them questions relating to images we provided.  The images had different body types.  After collecting the data and creating a slide show in Power Point, my group members and I gave a presentation in which we told about our findings.

Impact:   The impact of the ethnography was seeing how media has affected children's perception of body image.  I also learned how to use the Power Point program, so I can use it in my classroom.

Alignment:  The Ethnography clearly fulfills Tech IV-B objective because we used technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings.  The students were quiet young that we collected the data from, but we did find that more of the students preferred the skinny beautiful person to the overweight person.  We came to the conclusion that media has an effect on the children's attitudes of body image.  (Tech VI-D)  We as teachers need to be aware and teach the positive and negative uses of the media.  During a Power Point presentation can use verbal and nonverbal communication to get their point across.  I will use Power Point in my classroom to communicate and teach to my students.  (INTASC #6)   There was also another group of interns who collected data from fourth and fifth graders on the same topic.  When we began to compare their results to ours we began to see how children are influenced from the media.
