My Portrait of a Learner experience
has been wonderful. I have had so many opportunities to interact
with this student, and it has given me so much insight on this individual's
strengths and weaknesses in academics and other areas of her everyday activities.
During the times of our asessments and observations, I had the opportunity
to videotape different experiences that we had. This video is a great
tool to use in showing a student's level of learning and progress (11.2).
Many of the assessments included working with different namipulatives for
math and reading, to find her level for that subject. After assessing
the student, then I could talk to the teacher and explain to her the information
that I found and how it could relate to her other areas of learning.
I also gave my student a WRI, IRI and a spelling assessment to find out
her level of reading. When I performed these with the student, I
discovered that she is on the reading level that she needs to be on.
My Portrait of a Learner and I worked on computer software too (12.2).
The software was "The Magic School Bus Explores the Human Body."
My portrait student and I explored the human body together. We learned
interesting facts abou the different body parts. This evaluation
helped my student review the basics of a computer and to learn more about
science. This was a great experience and it gave the student some
time to work on something fun and interesting outside the classroom.
To be able to interact with this particular student on such an individual
basis and using technology, I had to have a permission slip signed by her
parents to ensure that her rights and protection were covered (14.1
& 14.3).
