Media
Literacy Web Page:
The media literacy web page is a page that Abby Mullinax and I created for use in the classroom. We focused on news broadcasts. We connected this form of media with language arts skills to produce an integrated lesson. We had the students watch clips of a news broadcast that we had pre-recorded from a news station on cable television (12.6). We followed the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Language Arts for the first grade and focused on the items that students should be doing in that grade level. We connected this to media by having them produce their own news broadcast and tape it using a video camcorder (12.7). They were required to locate resources for interviews, commercials, and information about sports in order to create the broadcast and present that information to the class through verbalization and video (12.1). This activity also follows the Computer and Technology Skills Curriculum for the first grade (10.1), (10.4) by having the students participate in the creation of a class multimedia sequential/linear story (2.5) and the students being involved in gathering, organizing, and displaying data (3.2) through their own production of a news broadcast. In order to create the script for the video, the students were asked to type out part of the script using the computer. They received some basic instruction about typing and using the computer hardware before beginning and the teacher must help them first write their sentences and then type them. As part of the learning experience we used some questions from the computer skills assessment such as, "What small hand-held device is used to move the cursor to a specific location on the screen?" and "What general term describes the physical equipment of a computer system, such as its video screen, keyboard, and storage devices?" (10.5). |
