        Portrait of a Learner

While in block at Appalachian State University, one of my assignments was Portrait of a Learner. Part of this assignment was that I choose one student from the second grade class that I was interning in to focus on for the semester. I was required to get permission from the student’s parents for my student to participate in this assignment. I tracked the academic growth of my learner over the semester and also developed a video that was about my Portrait of a Learner.  Three copies of the video were made. One copy was given to the parents, the other copies were given to my professor, and I kept the last copy to go into my files.
By doing this extensive work with this student, I got to use different kinds of assessment materials in different content areas. As a teacher, I will be able to do assessments on all of my students and be able to chart their growth throughout the school year. By using these assessments, I will be able to determine where my students are at academically and where I need to start with them in my classroom. Also by developing the video that dealt with my student, I will be able to use the information that I learned to collect data on students in my classroom. In my classroom, I plan to for each student to have a permission slip on file. I also plan to have weekly newsletters so that parents will be well informed of the events that are taking place in the class.
In doing the Portrait of a Learner assignment, I used technology effectively to collect information on student learning using a variety of methods(12.2). By developing a video on my Portrait Student and giving copies to my professor and his parents, I was able to use technology effectively and appropriately to communicate information in a variety of formats on student learning to colleagues, parents, and others(12.3). By having my student’s parents sign a permission form to participate in this assignment and documenting the music that was used in my video, I established procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security, and child protection(14.1). Also by documenting the music that was used in the video, I addressed social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use(14.3).
