PBS Context: PBS offers programming that can enhance a curriculum. There are programs such as Zoom, that is created for kids by kids. This show offers a variety of scientific activities that can be done easily in the class. The show encourages children to talk about investigations and send in the results. Responses are aired on the network television show. This is a fun way to help students get excited about science. I will use this show as a supplement to the lessons that I am teaching. Lesson plans and ideas are included. Impact: This show can help enforce the curriculum that is being taught. To develop the ability to do scientific inquiry, students plan and conduct a simple investigation, use simple equipment and tools to gather data, use data to construct reasonable explanations, and communicate explanations/evidence to others. Not only are they communicating with one another, they are also communicating with students across the nation when they send in their ideas, and when they hear the other studentsí ideas. Alignment: The PBS show Zoom can be used
to develop materials for an enhancement of the classroom curriculum. PBS,
the station that airs the show also has sites for lesson plans, ideas,
and activities (12.6).
In fact, the lesson plans sometimes revolve around the show that is being
aired. PBS encourages students to reach out and talk. Students could develop
an e-mail buddy from another school and communicate about scientific investigations
(10.2).
