Social Studies ABC Book Context: This ABC book was developed as a social studies project for a class in my educational experiences at Appalachian State University. This third grade book models some expectations I hold as the professional. The third grade curriculum includes a comprehensive study in "Community." The students are asked to analyze their community and link it to the letters of the alphabet so that they can become more aware of their surroundings. Each child is to create the document in a word processing program, save their information on a disc, and copy and paste some clip art onto the document. Impact: This lesson corresponds to the NC Standard Course of Study in the Social Studies and computer skills scope and sequence. A sample of this lesson has been scanned and is available to be seen by other teachers to see how this project can supplement the Social Studies curriculum. This ABC book is not limited to the third grade. It can be useful in K-6. Alignment: The ABC book can be used to teach an aspect of media literacy because children are exploring the world of the internet as well as exploring media in their community. Students take the information that they gather and transform it into a portfolio that can be used as an educational evaluation tool that will test their computer competency (10.1)(10.4). One of the media resources used will be the internet. The students will have the opportunity to search their community on the web (11.1). Also, the students will be creating a document that can be used as a community resource guide for the rest of the school (10.6 ). The students will be responsible for research, creating a text, saving the material on a disc, and being able to find the material on the disc. They will be evaluated accordingly.
