  • Software Evaluation

  • During my Internship during my Block at Appalachian State University, I created a software evaluation on the computer program, Word Munchers Deluxe.  It was created to use with fifth grade, language arts, as a supplemental lesson.  The lesson should be used to introduce, teach or reinforce learning the parts of speech in English grammar.

The strategies I used challenge the students to make connections to parts of speech and word examples.  Also, it helps them to see the differences in each part of speech.  It provides interactive learning that is both beneficial and fun.

This lesson correlates computer skills and language arts (10.4).  Also, it meets standards 1.1 and 2.1 of the North Carolina Computer Skills Curriculum (10.5).  The program demonstrates the ability to take text they see and turn it into an auditory sound.  This was good because he becomes easily frustrated when he can not figure out a word (13.1).  The program lets the user decide when they need the auditory help.  This lesson was used with a child that has a very special way of learning.  He does not work well with someone telling him how it is done.  He likes to learn it on his own, making it fit what makes sense to him (13.2). In this lesson, the students actively learn how to distinguish between different parts of speech, by using the program (12.5).  This is a wonderful tool that is specific to the discipline of language arts education (11.3)
