Story Pictures Web Assignment – This lesson is designed to allow students to practice creative writing while using computer technology.

Context:
This web page lesson was created using Netscape Composer as a part of my Media and Technology class at ASU.  It was created to provide a way for students to acquire technology experience by incorporating computer use into a language arts lesson.

Impact:
This lesson was created for a third grade classroom, although it could easily be adapted to fit other grade levels standards.  The students will learn how to locate a web page online.  The web page displays a set of pictures in random order.  It is the students’ job to put the pictures in a sequential order and tell a story according to that order.  This assignment meets curriculum standards in Language Arts and Technology.  This Web site is also very useful for teachers because the assignment can be adapted for many grade levels and student development levels.

Alignment:
The story pictures assignment requires students of all ages to perform many different skills that are described in the Computer/Technology Skills curriculum.  This assignment is quite versatile, as it meets NC Curriculum Standards for Language Arts as well (Tech. Comp. 10.1).  This assignment allows students to get experience with computer skills, such as writing in a word processing document and copying and pasting pictures, in a fun and interesting way (Tech. Comp. 10.4).  While completing this task, teachers can evaluate whether students grasp the copy/paste function, which is part of the Computer Skills Assessment (Tech. Comp. 10.5).  This activity appeals to children at all different levels of learning and performance.  Students should be able to complete this activity no matter what level or speed they may learn at because it leaves a lot of room for creativity and originality (Tech. Comp. 13.1).   This assignment also allows teachers to use the World Wide Web to introduce a lesson (INTASC #4).  By using the Internet and a word processor, teachers will be adding to their collection of instructional strategies while promoting problem solving and critical thinking skills in their students.  This Web Site and Story Picture activity meets the needs of all styles of learners, whether it is visual, hands-on, etc.  By using this site, teachers are promoting discovery and learning in all of his/her students, while utilizing a method that strays from the norm of traditional teaching strategies (INTASC #3).  (See also Literature Circle Unit Plan)
