Policy Discussion and Handouts
Context
In class we viewed a PowerPoint presentation on copyright laws and
Fair Use Policy. We then discussed as a class the impact of the presentation
on us as future educators. The PowerPoint presentation defined the
term copyright, stated the Fair Use Policy, gave examples of when and why
to include a copyright, and a sample copyright notice. Viewing the
PowerPoint presentation and then discussing it was a helpful way to learn
about what my classmates feel about copyright laws and Fair Use Policy.
Impact
As a future educator, it will be my job to teach my students about
copyrights, research, plagiarism, and the Fair Use Policy. The PowerPoint
presentation that we viewed in class was a good way for me to learn about
copyrights so that I can be informed when teaching my students. Copyright
laws and the Fair Use Policy are directly related to research and plagiarism.
Although kindergarten-2 grade students will not be asked to do a great
deal of research, older elementary school students will be asked to do
researched reports on various topics.
Alignment
The copyright PowerPoint presentation and class discussion aligns with
competency 14.1. I plan to teach
at the elementary level in the North Carolina school systems where I will
be given the task of informing children about certain laws and policies.
The copyright law and Fair Use Policy are two important examples of what
I will be responsible for teaching. These laws are important for
students to know not just so that they will not break them while doing
research for various reports and presentations. It is also important
for students to be informed about these laws so that if they ever write
anything, whether it be amateur or professional, that piece cannot be copied
without their permission as long as it is copyrighted.
