North
Carolina Computer Competencies
Context
I looked on the web page for the North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction (www.ncpublicschools.org).
I clicked on “Curriculum” and then I clicked on “Computer Skills.”
Then I clicked the grade range that I would like to teach, which is K-6.
I clicked on grade 2 because that is the specific grade that I would like
to teach. I then read and printed out the competencies for said curriculum.
I also searched for the 8th grade testing guidelines. I read and
printed out a document on the 8th Grade Computer Technology Skills.
Impact
I am going to be licensed to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina and
I will incorporate these computer skills into my classroom. I am
now aware that there are 6 strands in computer skills for all public school
students in North Carolina. The 6 strands are: societal issues,
keyboard utilization/word processing/desk top publishing, database, spreadsheet,
telecommunications, and multimedia/presentation.
Alignment
The printout of the NC Computer Skills aligns with competency
10.1 and as a future NC public school teacher, I now know and will
incorporate these skills in the classroom. The printout on the 8th
grade testing aligns with competency 10.5.
Although I do not plan to teach children in the 8th grade, I now understand
the assessment process from a discussion that we had in class about it.
I also understand the importance of my role as an elementary school teacher
to prepare students for future computer assessment.
