Websites for Students Whose Primary Language is Not English

Context
I went to the website, www.freetranslation.com, and took some time to explore the site.  I typed a few sentences in the text translator, clicked the “Translate” button, and printed my results.  Then I clicked the web translator button, and I chose to translate a page from www.southernliving.com.  The next website that I went to was www.englishlearner.com.  I explored the site and took some time to print out a few pages that I thought might be helpful to my career in education.

Impact
These sites will be very useful to me as a future elementary school teacher.  I can visit www.freetranslation.com to translate permission slips and newsletters that will go home to non-English speaking parents.  I can also use the site to translate other websites for my students who do not speak English.  I can visit www.englishlearner.com to look for lesson plans and tests to use with my non-English speaking students.  There is also an option on the site to register for weekly newsletters with tips, hints, and suggestions.

Alignment
The search of websites for students whose primary language is not English aligns with competency 13.3.  As a future North Carolina elementary school teacher, I know that I will have students in my classroom every year whose primary language is not English.  I also know that I will have part of the responsibility for teaching those students about the English language.  The websites that I found offer a great deal of helpful information and countless tools that I can use on a daily basis.  Using these websites will make my job much easier.

Alignment with INTASC Standards
This artifact also meets INTASC Standard 3 because the information found in this artifact provides teachers with information to teach diverse learners. This artifact was created to demonstrate my understanding that teachers need to respect individual learning differences in students.
