Computer Usage Lesson Plan:
a lesson created to teach students the importance of appropriate computer
usage, permission form regarding student participation in technology and
the teacher’s professional development and discuss legal, social and ethical
issues related to technology.
Context
This artifact was created during my pre-service training at Appalachian
State University during the Fall 2000 semester.
Impact
The Computer Usage lesson corresponds to the NCSCS for Computer Skills
and Technolgy. As a web page the lesson is available to other teachers
and for my use with my classes. The lesson is a 2-4 grade lesson,
but may be modified to meet the intstructional needs of older or younger
students.
Alignment
This lesson would ideally be presented to the class in the computer
lab using digital technology and a projector. Using this wireless
technology to show examples of the different web pages appropriate for
students to use and also showing the release form will help students better
understand the importance of being responsible computer users (Tech.
Comp. 12.6). The lesson contains a permission slip that informs
parents/guardians of the possibility their child may be video or audiotaped
or photographed during the school year. The form must be returned
to the school. The release form assures the teacher that the computer
is used appropriately and the students and teacher are protected (Tech.
Comp. 14.1). The computer usage sign-up sheet allows the teacher
to monitor student computer use. The log will also assist the teacher
in making the computer available as needed and monitor student use of the
computer (Tech. Comp. 14.2). Social,
legal and ethical issues of computer usage and technology are covered in
the lesson. This is somewhat specific to the school and school system
guidelines, however copyright laws are the same regardless of location
(Tech. Comp. 14.3).
