Classroom Design:  a classroom arrangement that allows for center areas, a reading area, class meeting space and student desks arranged in pods.

Context
I designed this classroom layout during a Classroom Management Study I conducted during my pre-service training Curriculum and Instruction class at Appalachian State University, Fall 2000.

Impact
This is the design of the "ideal" class I want as a beginning teacher.  Due to funding and other restrictions this exact classroom design may not be feasible, but certain components will be implemented when possible.  I will most definitely have a class meeting area and 3-4 center spaces that can be used for either math or reading or both.  Once I have my classroom assignment and meet my students, I will be able to redesign the class to meet the instructional needs of the students in my class.

Alignment
The classroom design provides space for both independent and group work.  Students will be able to move from area to area within the class and actively participate in classroom instruction.  In addition, students will be able to actively collaborate and use the resources, including technology, available to them so as to obtain the best learning opportunities possible (Tech. Comp. 12.4).  Being open to change will benefit me when I arrange my classroom.  The sketch of my classroom is ideal, however students’ individual characteristics will influence the design that will work best with each group of students.  My goal is to create a learning environment that encourages self-motivation, active participation in learning and promotes positive social interactions for all students in my class (INTASC # 5).
