Documentary on Media Influences:  a video documentary discussing media influences on 4th and 5th grade students.

Context
This documentary was created Fall 2000 as part of Integrating Media and Learning class during pre-service training at Appalachian State University.

Impact
The documentary discusses ways in which mass media influences children to behave, believe and portray themselves to others.  Students were video interviewed using a Camcorder.  A fellow intern and myself conducted the interview during our internship at our partnership school. This documentary will be useful in a media influences lesson or to be viewed and discussed by fellow faculty members.  A better understanding of children and media will be gained from the documentary video.

Alignment
The documentary is created using Camcorder footage and I-movie, video editing software to create a video documentary that portrays ways media influences students.  Using video editing is specific to the principles of media we targeted in our documentary (Tech. Comp. 11.3).  The video footage is edited using I-movie computer editing software.  In addition, the documentary portrays how students internalize and learn from media influences (Tech. Comp. 12.2).  The information collected while creating the documentary and the resulting product reflect the effect media has on students.  Included in the documentary are parent and teacher tips to make media a positive influence in students’ lives.  This documentary helped me grow professionally by exposing me to students’ views and opinions of media in their lives (INTASC #9).
