Pictures Are Worth a Thousand Stories: An On-line Lesson Plan.  This was designed for third grade and beyond.  It allows students to create a story using random pictures.   The web page includes links to the North Carolina State Curriculum, as well as an overview of the lesson plan.

Context
The lesson plan is on a web page developed for a Media and Technology class in my undergraduate studies.

Impact
The purpose of the lesson is to engage students in observation, imaginative and descriptive writing by creating a story with silly pictures, described in the lesson.  The lesson is designed for both students learning and for use by others as well.  It is available on the web as a reference for teachers use and includes links to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study competencies.

Alignment
The lesson plan describes detailed instructions on how to apply the lesson in your class.  It is easy to navigate through and includes links that should help further the lesson if so desired.   The lesson was put on the web to help teachers have access to a lesson that is engaging for students, fun, and can be integrated with Language Arts.  Pictures Are Worth a Thousand Words helps students identify appropriate computer skills such as word processing including cutting and pasting from the Internet, which are a part of the computer skills curriculum for grade 3 (Tech Comp 10.1).  This assignment is designed to incorporate computer skills into everyday classroom learning.  It provides an opportunity for students to use other media for learning other than pen and paper. (Tech Comp10.4

The assignment could be used to assess students performance of word processing skills such as cutting and pasting which will help develop skills necessary for the NC Computer Skills Assessment (Tech Comp10.5). Technology is used in this assignment to provide an experience, which will facilitate student learning in both the subject matter and in technology skills.  Students learn a way to do a Language Arts based lesson, using technology to make it easier (Tech Comp11.1).  Students are able to present their information with mastery as the assignment facilitates learning and comprehension.  By rearranging pictures on the computer, cutting, pasting and word processing, students experience every step in developing their own stories.  This lesson lets students own what they have done (Tech Comp 11.2). Students are required to work in groups on this assignment.  Group work is imperative at this grade level.  They must compromise on which pictures they are going to use, and they must work together to create stories for their pictures.  Students learn many valuble skills during group work like collaboration, sharing and taking turns, cooperation and teamwork (Tech Comp 12.5). The lesson is designed for teachers who are willing to use a variety of strategies to facilitate student learning as well as to encourage students to use different forms of media in learning (INTASC 4).
