WRI and Reading Assessment are used to evaluate student reading aptitude and word recognition. While clearly a form of testing these two assessments are quickly administered and carefully chosen for children who are thought to need additional reading help.

Context
These assessments were demonstrated to me by my reading professor while in my block at ASU.  While interning at Bethel Elementary School, I was assigned to assess three students who where having trouble with the fourth grade reading level books.  I read the children directions and taped their reading. After completing the assessment, I reviewed the tapes and listened for the type of errors made by the children. I then made a suggestion to the classroom teacher as to which reading level they should be performing on.

Impact
While the WRI and the reading assessment were being explained to me, I thought it to be a fairly simple task which I would have no problem administering.  After I performed it for the first time, I changed my mind to think that it was an assessment that I would have to practice in order to become fluent in the recording of errors.  Knowing how to administer these tests of word recognition and reading will be very helpful in my teaching.  In order to know how to teach children you must know at which level they comprehend.

Alignment
When taping students perform the assessments I can review the errors made and assess how the student should be instructed in the future. (IV A) The tape will also allow me to let the student see his/her progress over a given amount of time.  By understanding the process by which the assessments are given and scored I am demonstrating my ability to place students in the proper reading group level.  By placing students in groups, I will be able to plan for the best instructional practices for the most favorable learning environment.
