The Literature
Database is a collection of children's books ranging from wordless
picture books to middle school literature. It has been posted on the web
for easy access to all educators or parents. Each entry includes; author,
illustrator, publisher, copyright date, genre, subject, instructional ideas,
summary, rating and response to the book.
Context
I created this database for my Language Arts in the Elementary School
class while in my block at Appalachian State University. I read 20
books, of those some were picture books, while others were novels in different
areas of adolescent literature, five were submitted to the permanent collection.
Impact
While reading and recording the books and their summaries I was required
to assess the literature's grade level by looking at the words used and
the length of the pages and chapters. This database was helpful in
allowing me to practice placing books into different grade levels, for
integration of literature in my classroom. The database can be accessed
by different teachers looking for a book dealing with a particular subject,
to use in conjunction with any type of lesson. It is quick and rewarding,
when in search of a particular book.
Alignment
The Literature database is posted on the World Wide Web and has been
compiled by Appalachian block students over the course of the last few
years. This artifact is accessible to anyone who can log on to the
web page. Teachers, students and parents can look up books and read
how students rated the literature that is pertinent to your search.
In accessing this database the user will be able to save valuable time
due to the fact that they can find out within minutes how a book would
fit in with your intended lesson. (V
