The ABC book is a collection of distinguishing characteristics, places, crops and/or history related to North Carolina arranged in ABC order.

Context
I created this book while in my Social Studies for Elementary class while in my block at ASU.  We were given the choice to select either a travel brochure about a place in North Carolina, or the ABC book consisting of things about North Carolina. It is made for a fourth grade social studies curriculum which focuses on the state.

Impact
This project required me to research things about North Carolina that I did not know, and arrange them in ABC order to fulfill the assignment.  I found this project to be extremely helpful in researching, gathering and illustrating a book of my own.  I would assign this to any classroom that I teach to provide the same experiences for them. This book can be modified to reflect the different social studies curriculum for each grade.

Alignment
This project allows the teacher to engage students in an activity that encompasses many different research needs as well as the satisfaction of a finished product.  As well as assessing the students knowledge about their state, fulfilling the curriculum goals and instilling pride in their work.  This type of assignment engages the children with individual creativity and choices, yet structures them with the format of a book.
