Media Influences Videotape, a short documentary, which focuses on the impact of the media on children

Context
This documentary was created during my pre-service training at Appalachian State University in the course “Media and Technology in the Elementary School.”

Impact
This project was very valuable because it revealed how much media actually affects our nation’s children. Knowing how much media impacts children influences me to focus on media literacy in my classroom. This video could also be shown to children, parents and other teachers to demonstrate media’s impact on children.

Alignment
This videotape would be an excellent resource to show in conjunction with a presentation on media literacy for parents or even students.  Even though this documentary is short, it certainly gets the point across. To research what students already knew about the media or how it influenced them, I interviewed several students and recorded them with a video camera (Tech 12.2). Through creating this video, I realized that television or video is best utilized in short segments, as opposed to showing an entire length video that could bring out the worst in students’ attention spans. This project serves as a powerful visual to help children learn about media literacy through interviews with children (Tech 12.6). The video would be an appropriate introduction to media literacy, which is included in the Information Skills curriculum for children. Through viewing the film, students would begin to think about how media has influenced their lives (Tech 10.2).
