Developmental Study, an online resource for parents and teachers that explains the intellectual, social, development of sixth graders.

Context
This developmental study was created during my pre-service training at Appalachian State University in the course, “Curriculum and Instruction in the Elementary School.”

Impact
As a class, we decided that our developmental studies would be most beneficial in the form of a web page. By creating a web page, the information is accessible to both parents and teachers.

Alignment
The information contained within the developmental study gives the reader an overview of sixth graders’ intellectual, social and emotional development. As part of the web page, parents and teachers can also access information about the development of other grade levels (Tech 12.3).
Through using several different web sites, which are included on the page, I was able to collect information about how students at this age learn (Tech. 12.2).
This web page could be introduced to other teachers through a link on my own personal web page or by creating a list of resources for the faculty of the school where I teach. To relay the information to parents, I would include the web address in a parent newsletter and encourage parents to learn more about their child (INTASC #10).
While completing my developmental study, I had to research the development of sixth graders and think about how I would provide appropriate learning opportunities for them in my classroom. These ideas are reflected in the “Teacher Tips” portion of the web page (INTASC #2).
