Artifact 10

Legal and Ethical Use of Computer Resources is designed to teach the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use.  Copyright laws can also be found on this web site www.dpi.state.nc.us/copyright1.html .

Rationale for the Artifact:  Ethics Role Playing Activity

Competency 14.1: " Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security, and child protection."

Competency 14.3:  “Social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use.”

Context:
I created this presentation during the summer of 2001 in Classroom Use of the Microcomputer in grades K-12.  This artifact was designed to teach the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use.  To complete this artifact we had to role-play the ethics views in the classroom.  We got into groups and then every group took an index card with an illegal role on it.  We took several minutes to prepare and then had to act out the illegal act to the class.  My group had to act out stealing credit card numbers off the Internet, which is very illegal and ethically wrong when using technology.  The most important one to remember though is that it is illegal to copy software of any kind from your friend, family, or any other person.  This could cause you a lot of problems in the future.  The class also looked at two handouts that covered this artifact.  They were titled Valle Crucis Elementary School Policy on Acceptable Use of Computers, Netiquette (Internet Etiquette), and The Acceptable Use Policy from the Internet.  All three of these were very helpful in giving us good examples of how to use technology in the future.

Impact:
As a future teacher, I need to be a role model for my students to follow.  In order to be a good role model I plan on teaching the proper ways to use technology in the classroom.  Students need to have good positive role models that teach them right from wrong in order to succeed in the future.

Alignment:
This artifact aligns with competency 14.1 - it helps students to understand the copyright laws and fair use policies when using other peoples work.  It is for their protection within the classroom

This artifact aligns with competency 14.3 – as a future teacher; I know and will incorporate these things into my lessons in order to teach them the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use.  This will also teach them a sense of right and wrong, which will also help them in the future.
