Artifact 6

Ella Enchanted Video Project is an activity that uses children's literature and technology to create a informative video.  This video project is based upon Gail Carson Levine's novel Ella Enchanted.

Rationale for the Artifact: Ella Enchanted Video Project

Competency 10.2: "Use school television resources that support the curriculum."

Competency 11.3: "Use technology based tools that are specific to the discipline."

Competency 12.6: "Resources available including satellite, cable, wireless, and ITFS (Instructional Television Fixed Service)."

Context:
I created this artifact during block of my senior year.  We created a video based on the novel Ella Enchanted.  We shot our video by using digital video cameras to record our acts which were previously planned out and scripted.  Then we used I Movie on a Macintosh computer to edit it into a video format.  We edited the video by clipping out scenes, splitting scenes, adding music, and adding visual aids in order to make it flow smoothly like an actual movie.  The finished product is a news cast that focuses mainly on the big stories from the novel Ella Enchanted.  It is made up of clips from my group and the other groups within my class.

Impact:
As a future teacher, I will need to be up to date on the latest technology.  Creating this video allowed me to use a digital video camera, which is the latest video camera that is used today.  This project has taught me various ways to use technology within my classroom to create projects and turn them into useful tools that the students will enjoy seeing.  Today's students learn the most up to date information about technology and how it can be used. I think that this will be an awesome way to create a video that allows parent to see what there students are learning about while at school.

Alignment:
This artifact aligns with competency 10.2 - it allowed me to use school television resources that support the curriculum to create a video based on a children's novel.  It would be a very fun and interesting assignment for the higher level grades to create their own video using the same resources.

This artifact aligns with competency 11.3 - through the project I was allowed to use technology based tools that support the discipline.  I was able to use a digital video camera to capture clips on tape in order to create a video based upon a children's novel.

This artifact aligns with competency 12.6 - during the editing process of creating the video a clip from a movie was used this shows that I can use Cable in classroom related activities.

The Ella Enchanted video project also aligns with INTASC principle 8 - it will allow my students to grow physically and socially, while creating their final project.  The students will need to know how to physically utilize the technology in order to use it.  They will also being growing socially by working within a group of other students and getting to know them.  As a future educator, it is important that we ensure that our students are continually developing and this project allows us an excellent opportunity to improve these skills.  This project will also check for the students understanding, by seeing if they can correctly complete the task, as well as understanding the ideas that are being taught.
